| Thallus loosely adnate, smooth, dull, greenish grey to greenish red or violet, without paler slightly raised areas, to 3–7 cm wide and 0.3 mm thick; globose granules absent. Hypothallus below the entire thallus, byssoid, whitish to brownish or red in part; hyphae 1–3 µm wide. Prothallus to 1 mm wide, byssoid, composed of interwoven and radiating hyphae, whitish in the inner part, red to violet in the outer part. Pseudoisidianumerous, cylindrical, simple or sparingly branched, concolorous with the thallus or with red pigments concentrated at the apices, 0.1–0.8 mm long, c. 0.1 mm wide. Photobiont cells solitary or a few cells aggregated, 8–22 × 7–18 μm. Medulla distinct, white. Asci and pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C+ red, KC+ red, P–, UV+ pale grey-white; pigmented areas K+ purple; containing gyrophoric acid (major or minor), ovoic acid (major or minor), lecanoric acid (minor), chiodectonic acid (minor or trace), O-methylvioxanthin (minor or trace). |
